How to Authenticate Chrome Hearts
There's no single tell. What we actually check on a Chrome Hearts piece, starting with where it came from, and how to get a second opinion.
You won't find a list of ten tells here. Counterfeiters read the same lists, and a fake that passes all ten is still a fake. What we can tell you is the order we check things in, and it starts before we touch the piece.
Where it came from
Provenance comes first. A receipt from a Chrome Hearts store, the original owner, a dealer we've bought from before: each of these makes everything that follows easier. Wear can be faked. A history is much harder to fake.
Even a million dollars doesn't skip this step. When a New York reseller bought 13 pieces said to be Karl Lagerfeld's this spring, Dazed reported that they came with no estate paperwork. So he had staff from a Chrome Hearts trading company in Japan authenticate them in person before the deal closed. He also checked one piece against a 2013 photo of Lagerfeld wearing it.
Stamps
Chrome Hearts silver is marked. On a lot of older pieces the stamp gives the brand, "925" for sterling, and a year. A vintage Maltese cross ring listed on 1stDibs reads "Chrome Hearts 925 2000." The format isn't the same on every piece or in every era, so a stamp is something to compare against a known real piece, not a box to tick.
Hardware, stitching, prints
On clothing and leather, look at the finish on the zips, snaps and buttons, at the stitching and edges, and at whether a print matches the era the seller claims. None of these settles it alone. Taken together, they usually tell you enough.
Why it's this hard
Chrome Hearts is copied enough to sue over it. It went after MNML over cross-covered jeans in 2020 and later went after Fashion Nova. The copies that reach resale aren't the obvious ones.
A second opinion
If you own something and aren't sure, email clear daylight photos of the stamps, tags and hardware, plus the whole piece, to hello@starchive.la. We'll tell you what we see. Everything we sell has been examined in hand and comes with a lifetime authenticity guarantee. There's more on our authentication page.
